SAAS PRICING: PICK THE RIGHT MODEL
Your pricing model determines your growth trajectory more than any feature. Freemium, tiered, usage-based, or hybrid — here's how to choose and optimize for maximum revenue.

8 SAAS PRICING MODELS
1.Freemium Model
Give a useful free tier to acquire users, then convert a percentage to paid plans. Slack, Notion, and Canva prove this works: 2-5% conversion rates on millions of free users create massive revenue. Key: make the free tier valuable enough to hook users, limited enough to drive upgrades.
2.Tiered Pricing
Offer 3-4 tiers (Starter, Pro, Enterprise) with escalating features and limits. This is the most common SaaS model because it serves different customer segments. Best practice: anchor the middle tier as the obvious choice by making it the best value.
3.Usage-Based Pricing
Charge based on consumption: API calls, compute hours, messages sent, or data processed. AWS, Twilio, and OpenAI use this model. Revenue scales with customer success, but unpredictable bills cause churn. Solution: usage caps and spend alerts.
4.Per-Seat Pricing
Charge per user per month. Simple to understand and predictable for buyers. Salesforce and Microsoft 365 dominate with this model. Downside: customers minimize seats, reducing adoption. Modern twist: charge for active users only (Slack model).
5.Flat-Rate Pricing
One price, all features, unlimited usage. Basecamp charges $99/month regardless of team size. This works when simplicity is your competitive advantage and your costs don't scale linearly with usage.
6.Hybrid & Credit Models
Combine base subscription with usage credits. HubSpot charges a platform fee plus per-contact pricing. AI tools often sell credit packs. This balances revenue predictability with usage-based scaling.
7.Value-Based Pricing
Price based on the value delivered, not the cost to serve. If your tool saves customers $100K/year, charging $10K/year is a no-brainer. Requires deep understanding of customer ROI. Common in enterprise: ROI calculators justify pricing.
8.Reverse Trial (Premium First)
Start users on the premium plan for 14 days, then downgrade to free. Users experience the full product, building habits around premium features they don't want to lose. Toggl and Ahrefs see 40-60% higher conversion vs. traditional freemium.
