ZERO TO ONE: BUILDING A STARTUP FROM NOTHING
Every billion-dollar company started with nothing. Here's the phase-by-phase playbook for going from an idea in your head to a real business with paying customers.

8 PHASES FROM ZERO TO ONE
1.Phase 0: Problem Discovery
Talk to 50+ potential customers before writing a single line of code. Map their workflows, identify pain points they spend money to solve today, and rank problems by frequency, severity, and willingness to pay. The best startups solve problems people actively search for solutions to.
2.Phase 1: Idea Validation
Test your hypothesis with a landing page, waitlist, or concierge MVP. Charge money early (even $1) to validate willingness to pay. Run smoke tests with ads pointing to a pre-launch page. If you can't get 100 signups with $500 in ads, reconsider the idea.
3.Phase 2: MVP Build
Build the smallest possible product that delivers the core value proposition. Use no-code tools or a single framework. Ship in 2-4 weeks, not months. The MVP should be embarrassingly simple but solve the #1 problem better than alternatives.
4.Phase 3: First 10 Customers
Acquire your first customers through direct outreach, not marketing. Email, call, DM, or visit potential users. Offer white-glove onboarding. Learn everything about how they use your product. These customers become your feedback loop and case studies.
5.Phase 4: Product-Market Fit
Iterate rapidly based on user feedback. Track the Sean Ellis test: if 40%+ of users say they'd be 'very disappointed' without your product, you have PMF. Before PMF, nothing else matters. After PMF, everything gets easier.
6.Phase 5: Repeatable Growth
Find one acquisition channel that works and double down. Build a growth model that shows customer acquisition cost (CAC) vs lifetime value (LTV). When LTV > 3x CAC with < 12 month payback, you have a scalable business.
7.Phase 6: Team Building
Hire your first 3-5 employees in roles you're weakest at. Prioritize builders over managers. Create a culture document before you reach 10 people. Every early hire shapes your company's DNA for years.
8.Phase 7: Scale or Stay Lean
Decide whether to raise venture capital and pursue hypergrowth, or stay bootstrapped and optimize for profitability. Both paths are valid. The key is matching your funding strategy to your market size and personal goals.
